David Van Wallace, an engineering student at Notre Dame University with an IQ pf 175, broke his neck diving off a dock in Lake Saint Clair in 1924. Van Wallace, seen here in 1955 at his home in Mount Clemens, actually designed his own bed and was a favorite of the nuns at St Peter's Church in Mount Clemens, who would tell children to go see Van Wallace if they wanted to see a saint. Detroit declared Van Wallace Day in 1947 to raise money for a trip to the healing baths of Lourdes, France where five million go yearly seeking a miracle. He lived to be 59.
