Michigan became a State in 1837 and Frederick expected to prosper due to being on the eastern terminus of the Clinton and Kalamazoo Canal. The canal was eventually built between Frederick and Rochester and the canal boat, The Uncle Peter, made regular trips between Frederick and Utica. There were more people living in Frederick in 1837 than live in the area today.
