Gates were at each end of the locks. Each lock was about 100 ft long. The contractors had the choice of making the locks out of stone or wood. In Clinton Twp they are made of white oak timbers. The canal was never extended east of the Village of Frederick (Moravian Road and the Clinton River) However, a large lock was built in Mount Clemens at the site of the former Beauty College and was constructed out of Ohio sandstone.
